North Indian Classical music and Kathak dance workshop with
George Ruckert and Gretchen Hayden-Ruckert
M-DO & TTE Studio
THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 18 & FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 19, 2008
6-9 PM
George Ruckert is a master musician and a fantastic teacher. His evening workshops will give students of classical Indian music an opportunity to increase their knowledge of the raaga melodic system, the art of classical accompaniment (tabla) from both an historical and practical perspective and the opportunity of studying with this rare artist, who has extensive background in both western and Indian classical music.
Kathak dance students will experience Gretchen's depth of knowledge, drama and musicality. She has created many original narrative works, which demand high levels of dance technique and abhinaya (the narrative element). During this workshop, she will be teaching her seminal work "Saint Lucy" to the participants.
Together, George and Gretchen will work with musicians and dancers, developing a group choreography based upon a composition by Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and the New Maihar Band.
By participating in this workshop, students will gain an increased knowledge of the music and dance, their cultural and historical contexts, possibilities for cross-cultural creation, and a greater access to connecting with other artists, musicians and dancers.
Cost: $100. Some experience in Kathak and Tabla is necessary.
